Purifier House may not yet be a familiar name, but anyone who has lived or spent any time in Bristol will certainly recognise it. For years, the empty stone shells of the old gasworks have dominated the bank of the floating harbour in Hotwells, stubbornly resisting the regeneration which has seen the waterfront open up as an attractive place to live and a leisure amenity.In recent years, the development of Canon's Marsh has extended the buzz of the city centre from Millennium Square along the north side of the harbour towards Cumberland basin, and now Linden Homes have converted the first of the gasworks buildings, Purifier House, into apartments, with a spectacular location on the Harbour Inlet, at the bottom of Brandon Hill, and right opposite SS Great Britain.
Quite apart from the vibrant programme of events that happens all year round by one on the water, Bristol's harbourside is a tourist attraction in its own right. How to get there:
By Ferry
Surely the most spectacular way to arrive, either from the Centre, from Temple Meads, or from SS Great Britain. Bristol Ferry Boats operate a regular service from anywhere in the Floating Harbour - get off at stop number 3, Harbour Inlet. Number Seven Boat Trips run a regular shuttle back and forth from SS Great Britain for only 80p a trip.
By Bus
To get as close as possible by bus, you want to head for Jacobs Wells Road, Hotwells Road or Anchor Road. The gallery is by the roundabout that links these three main roads. First Bus offer plenty of services with good connections all over town.
By Bike
Bristol is a Cycling City, so what better way to come than on your bike? There is plenty of bike parking on Anchor Road, immediately behind the gallery.
On Foot
By far the best way to approach the gallery is from the Harbourside Walk. This provides easy traffic free access from the centre via Millennium Square and from the South of the city via Hotwells. The Gallery makes a great stop on the Heritage Trail, which is a very popular walk around Bristol's historic harbour.
By Car
If you have to drive, there is pay and display parking in Deanery Road and the car parks at College Street, Millennium Square and Canon's Way.
